Our Living Room Reveal

Here we go, here we go, here we GOOOOOOOOO. This room has been a long freaking time coming. I have been dreaming of this space for years on end, but really was low priority while we did other projects.

Let’s start from the very beginning (a very good place to start). This is what the room looked like when we first moved in, almost seven years ago. The carpet and upholstered walls were soaked with cat urine, the layers of flooring over the original pine were disgusting, but protected the original floors well.

I cannot even believe we bought this house in this condition. I hardly can even remember what poor condition it was in!

The first months we owned the house were a mad dash to get it livable. We cleaned everything out of here, drywalled, refinished the floors, and painted everything white. I didn’t have time to make decisions, we just rushed to get it to a baseline living condition. Once we were in that baseline living condition, we had various projects we had to get done in a very specific order.

This white room was really on the backburner for the longest time. It was FINE, but completely uninspiring. We did have rugs and some other furniture in here, but I took these photos mid-prep, so they are slightly more bare than what we’d been living in these past few years.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes, because this living room is FINALLY finished!

The biggest undertaking was planning a whole wall of built in shelves. We’d never done anything like this before, but I’m delusional enough to believe we could pull it off, and thankfully Ethan went along with it. With a whole lot of Youtube and a lot of trial and error, we (mostly Ethan) built this whole wall that’s now the focal point of the room.

All of the furniture was existing in the room, but it looks completely transformed in the space. It was mostly thrifted over time, a mixture of antique and modern pieces. Previously things looked like a random collection of pieces, now it truly feels cohesive, like it all fits together.

I knew moment I saw it I wanted this light fixture. No other light fixture compared. It was a little out of my budget, but I stalked sales until I finally found it at a price I was comfortable with and I went for it. And I was absolutely not wrong, it is my favorite light fixture we own, and totally makes the space.

One thing I really wanted to plan strategically was how the living room flowed into the smaller passthrough space adjacent to it. Because our home has a back addition that was added about 60 years after it was first built, there are some areas where the floors and cased openings give clues that it did not used to be one space. This particular space next to our living room is wider than a hallway, and feels like it’s part of the living room, but feels separate at the same time. The ceiling height is different, and it had some pretty textured wallpaper I wasn’t interested in taking down. A friend of mine said to treat the two spaces as sisters and not twins, which really stuck with me. I used a grasscloth wallpaper on the ceiling of the main living room, and carried it through on the walls in the secondary space. Sisters, not twins. The wall color in the main living room is Sherwin Williams Debonair, and all of the trim is Sherwin Williams Stargazer.

The sconces on the bookshelf wall were a last minute addition. I had intended to use some antique sconces we had in our garage when we moved in, but they ended up being smaller than a modern standard size, and we had already had electrical run, so we purchased these instead. I dressed up the shades with some velvet ribbon to add an extra oomph, but I’m super happy with them.

After envisioning what this room could be for so long, it feels surreal to actually be living in it. Home takes time, and although we are a little slower than most, I’m so pleased to finally be living in a space that feels like a reflection of our family and our taste.

Although most of the items in our space were collected secondhand over time, below are the sources for items still available. Anything not linked is custom, or vintage.

coffee table | curtains (these are customizable, ours are the green color) | Frame TV (ours is the 55″, the perfect not too bug size, in my opinion) | throw pillow covers (ours are the powder blue color)

Thank you, for those that have followed along with this project over on Instagram, as I’ve been sharing things. Your excitement has meant the world. That’s all for today, friends. Have a fabulous day!

Dear Diary

Dear Diary #001

In an effort to publish more on this space, I’m adding a segment here called Dear Diary, which will be a more personal extension of content you might find on my social media and in my room reveals. More like catching up with a friend about a random assortment of topics if you will. I share my home here, but I want to share a bit more as well.

This year (the 24 days of it thus far) has really forced me to lean in to the purpose of winter which has been to hibernate, rest, and recharge. Sure the flu and a cold spell forced us to retreat into our home, but I’ve rarely left the house these weeks, and it’s been a lovely reminder of what the winter season really should be. Not the rise-and-grind hustle culture that often comes with messaging around the new year, but the soft and slow entry into the new year where you bundle up inside and don’t go out after dinnertime.

Projects We’ve Been Working On: We’ve been (sort of) working on our living room project, which currently consists of building the wooden bookshelves that will be built in in the living room. Because it’s been so cold, time has been few and far between to work outside in the garage, but it’s coming along. Once the bookshelves are installed and the majority of the work moves inside, we won’t be as dependent on the weather and able to really get moving.

What We’ve Been Watching: We binge watched The Day of the Jackal in a handful of evenings staying up way later than we normally do, because each night we just HAD to watch one more episode. It’s a suspenseful/action type show, which isn’t usually my thing, but the fashion and the all-over-Europe setting was gorgeous and the storyline kept my attention. Definitely worth checking out if you’re needing a show to get into.

What I’ve Been Wearing: I have to admit that I’ve never in my 32 years before this winter owned cashmere. I am a changed woman. I’ve been living in this sweater all winter long, which feels more comfortable than a sweatshirt but is much more put together looking. That and this lipstick has me feeling like I have my stuff together even though the only place I’m going is out to the school pickup line.

What’s On My Thrift List: Currently I’m on the hunt for a small bookshelf for my son’s room. He’s getting to an age where he wants to display some of his lego creations and school crafts and whatnot, and he really doesn’t have a space for that. I’m keeping my eyes out for a bookshelf for his space.

What My Kids are Into: My kids have reached a new milestone where I can take my eyes off of them for short periods of time without worry. As we’ve been working on building the bookcases, the kids are running around, but less dependent on us. We’ve had babies under two the entire time we’ve lived in our home, and this feels like a milestone I didn’t know existed. One thing that keeps the older ones occupied for long periods of time are these paint by sticker books. My mom had a few out around Christmas and they were a big hit with the kids and adults alike. My four year old is just about able to do them independently, and I find myself working on them at times. It’s similar to puzzling in a quiet, mind quieting way.

Let me know what you think of this type of post. A little bit of a different style, but hopefully in a good way! I’m excited to see how things evolve. I’m not going to commit to a particular posting schedule, but I hope to do them occasionally! That’s all for today, friends. Have a fabulous day!

House Progress

Our 2025 Home Project To Do List

Can you believe it’s already 2025? Wild. This summer will be seven years in our house and I just now feel like we’re getting close to the end of the tunnel with projects we want to. Of course old home stewardship is ongoing in perpetuity, but there is a point at which I would consider our house “done enough” save for ongoing things, if that makes sense. This year we have a few large projects we plan to get done, and I wanted to share a bit more about my thought process for each one.

First, the one that we are currently working on is our living area. When we purchased the home, we did a lot of up front work to remove upholstery on the walls, tore out several layers of flooring and refinished the original wood, drywalled the room, but then we left it a blank space to come back to later. It’s been a white box for quite some time as other rooms have taken priority. This is the year of finshing our public spaces, and I am SO excited to get this room looking like an accurate representation of our home/family. For far too long it’s been a boring, uninspiring space.

The vibe is very traditional chic, with all my favorite colorways. An homage to some of the house’s history with a modern update that suits us. Above is the moodboard for the space, with some items being exact representations of the items I own (the rug!), and others being placeholders for the style of item I’m looking for. Ethan is building an entire wall of built in bookshelves, and we’ll be painting everything a lovely blue color, and adding grasscloth wallpaper to the ceiling (!!!). A new light fixture, sconces, possibly upholstery, and drapery. The styling is going to be the fun part, and I can’t wait!

Immediately following the living room, we’ll be moving in the the front room which serves as our playroom/office/music room. It was originally the parlor of the home, and it’s used much the same way now as it was 100+ years ago. We’ll be bringing in some professionals to do some drywall and trimwork, as well as installing some new (salvaged) doors. Once that’s done, it’ll be easy work for me to turn the space into a moody office. I haven’t put together a visual moodboard just yet, but the plan is to have the walls a deep green with plaids and leather furniture. Like a dark academia/nautical/European library feel. If you can envision the vibe I’m talking about from that description, you are my people for sure. I hope to have both the living room and the playroom finished by this summer.

In tandem with the two inside projects that we will be working on, I am going to be overhauling some areas of our outdoor spaces as well. I’m not much of a gardener, but I’d really like to get into it. I’m planning some raised garden beds, and some hardscaping around it with pea gravel, etc. We have an inground fire pit we’ll be removing and replacing with sod, so our kids have more room to play in the back. I also have some longer term plans for removing a portion of our privacy fence and replacing it with a row of large bushes, but I’m not sure our kids are quite old enough to play without a fully fenced area, so that may have to wait. But is part of the long term vision! I’ll be spending time this spring and summer working on both inside and outside projects as time and weather allows.

And then for the fall, when our downstairs is completely finished…who knows? I could do anything at that point! Be sure to follow along on Instagram as I share lots of real time progress over there.

That’s all for today, friends. Have a fabulous day!
